VTS12P ESS three-phase solar hybrid trailer with twelve deployed solar panels

A mobile hybrid power unit is only as useful as the motors, pumps and equipment it can actually start and hold. The short answer: pick a single-phase hybrid generator, such as the 15 kVA VTS8P ESS, for site offices, lighting, single-phase tools and small split AC units, and pick a three-phase hybrid generator, such as the 30 kVA VTS12P ESS, for pumps, compressors, welding equipment and any load rated for 400 V three-phase. Below is a load-by-load matrix plus the sizing logic behind it, so a site electrician or procurement team can specify the right unit the first time.

Why phase output decides more than you’d think

A diesel genset or hybrid ESS rated in kVA tells you apparent power, not whether that power arrives as one live wire or three. Most office loads, lighting circuits and small AC splits are built for single-phase 230 V. Pumps, compressors, cranes, large chillers and industrial tools above roughly 3-5 kW are almost always wound for three-phase, because a three-phase motor starts smoother, draws less current per phase for the same output, and runs cooler at full load. A three-phase motor connected to a single-phase supply will not start on its own, and attempts to force it usually end with a tripped protection device or an overheated winding.

This is the gap a dedicated three phase hybrid generator closes on a mobile deployment: it reproduces the L1/L2/L3 supply a fixed industrial installation would give the same motor, but from a trailer that also carries solar input, battery storage and a diesel backup.

VTS8P ESS: single-phase 15 kVA, built for the office and lighting load

The VTS8P ESS runs a single Victron Quattro inverter rated at 15,000 VA / 12,000 W continuous, with a surge rating of 25,000 W for starting single-phase motors and compressors. It carries 8 × 380 W solar panels, a 30.7 kWh LiFePO4 battery and an 18 kVA Yanmar diesel generator, which comes online only once the battery’s state of charge drops below the set point and switches off again once it’s recharged. Output is single-phase 230 V through 63 A and 32 A sockets, and the maximum continuous output current is 53 A / 50 A, enough for a site office, LED lighting, laptops, a small workshop with single-phase power tools, and single-phase split or window AC units.

VTS12P ESS: three-phase 30 kVA, built for motors and heavier mixed loads

The VTS12P ESS steps up to three Victron Quattro inverters, each rated 10,000 VA / 8,000 W continuous (24 kW combined) with a 20,000 W peak rating per unit. It carries 12 × 450 W solar panels, a 51.2 kWh LiFePO4 battery and a 35 kVA Hatz diesel generator (400 V, three-phase) feeding a three-phase 400 V AC input. Output is three-phase 230 V per phase, 50 Hz, through one 63 A 5-pin socket and one 32 A socket. At 4,000 kg, with four units per 40 ft container, it suits rental fleets and EPCs running pumps, compressors or three-phase welding gear on remote sites.

Load-type decision matrix

Load type Typical equipment Phase requirement Best match

Split or window AC units (small to mid-size) 3-9 kW cooling units Single-phase VTS8P ESS
Submersible, dewatering or irrigation pumps Three-phase motors (check the starting method) Three-phase VTS12P ESS
Workshop air compressors Three-phase compressor motors Three-phase VTS12P ESS
Three-phase welding equipment Site fabrication, pipe welding Three-phase VTS12P ESS
Packaged AC units Three-phase compressors within the unit’s continuous rating Three-phase VTS12P ESS
Telecom shelter (rectifiers, aircon) Mostly single-phase rack equipment Single-phase (check shelter AC unit rating) VTS8P ESS, confirm AC unit phase
Mixed site: office plus pump plus lighting Combined loads on one feed Three-phase feed, single-phase sub-circuits VTS12P ESS

If a single piece of equipment on the load list is rated for three-phase, size the whole unit around that load. Running a phase converter off a single-phase trailer to feed one three-phase motor is possible in theory but adds a failure point and a derating step that most rental fleets prefer to avoid.

Sizing logic: kVA, power factor and starting current

Three numbers decide whether a unit will carry the load, not just the headline kVA figure.

Real power versus apparent power. Most AC loads run at a power factor around 0.8. That is why the VTS8P ESS’s 15 kVA inverter is rated 12,000 W continuous (15 × 0.8), and the VTS12P ESS’s 30 kVA figure comes from three 8,000 W inverters (24 kW combined, 30 kVA at 0.8 PF). Size against the kW figure for continuous loads such as lighting, office equipment and a running pump, not the kVA nameplate.

Starting current. A direct-on-line (DOL) motor can pull six to eight times its running current for a second or two at start-up. This is where the peak rating matters as much as the continuous rating: the VTS8P ESS’s inverter has a 25,000 W peak rating, and each of the three inverters in the VTS12P ESS has a 20,000 W peak rating, one per phase. On a three-phase motor the inrush is shared across the three phases, so it is the per-phase peak that has to cover it, not the combined figure. Small three-phase motors can usually start direct-on-line; for larger pumps and compressors, a soft starter or VFD cuts the inrush sharply and is often the difference between a unit that starts the motor and one that trips. Give the motor rating and starting method when you request a quote, and the configuration is checked against them.

Diesel backup sizing. Each unit’s diesel backup is matched to its battery and site load for stretches of cloudy weather: 18 kVA on the VTS8P ESS, 35 kVA on the VTS12P ESS. The genset does not have to match the inverter’s peak figure: short peaks are drawn from the LiFePO4 battery through the inverters, while the genset recharges the battery and supports the load when it runs.

Mixed sites: running single-phase and three-phase loads together

A construction site with an office trailer, site lighting and a three-phase concrete pump or compressor is a common scenario in Gulf and Australian projects alike. The practical approach is to run the three-phase loads directly off the VTS12P ESS’s L1/L2/L3 output and take single-phase sub-circuits (office, lighting) from one phase to neutral, balancing the office and lighting loads across the three phases as evenly as the site layout allows. This keeps one unit on site instead of mixing a single-phase and three-phase trailer, which simplifies fuel logistics, monitoring and crew familiarity. The VTS20P ESS offers the same 30 kVA three-phase output with a larger 20 × 450 W solar array for sites that want to push diesel runtime down further on a mixed load profile.

Voltage and frequency: configured to the destination, not fixed at the factory

In standard configuration, the VTS8P ESS delivers single-phase 230 V and the VTS12P ESS three-phase 230 V per phase (400 V between phases), both at 50 Hz. The datasheets describe that standard build, not a fixed limit: as the factory, AB-iPower configures output voltage and frequency to the destination country, and the configuration is confirmed on the quotation. Australia and most Gulf countries use 230/400 V at 50 Hz, Saudi Arabia uses 60 Hz, and North American sites call for 120/240 V, 120/208 V or 277/480 V at 60 Hz. Confirm your country’s standard, the socket types your crew already carries, and whether the site needs a 50 Hz or 60 Hz output when you request pricing, so the unit arrives wired for your distribution board rather than needing an adapter on site.

Beyond 30 kVA three-phase

For continuous industrial loads above what a 30 kVA trailer can carry, the VMHV100K3 ESS moves to a 60 kW PCS, 115 kWh of LiFePO4 and a 60 kVA Cummins generator, and the VMHV160K3 to a 100 kW PCS with a 225 kWh battery, both with three-phase 400/230 V output as standard. The hybrid generator buying guide compares the whole range. Where the site needs three-phase 400 V from a battery unit rather than a solar and diesel trailer, see our 30 kW mobile battery energy storage system as a diesel generator alternative. For rental fleets serving construction, telecom or wider rental-fleet accounts, it is common to keep one or two VTS8P ESS units for office and lighting call-outs and a VTS12P ESS for jobs with pump or compressor loads, rather than standardizing the whole fleet on one phase configuration.

Frequently asked questions

Can the VTS8P ESS run a three-phase motor?

No. The VTS8P ESS outputs single-phase 230 V through one 15 kVA Victron Quattro inverter. It is built for office loads, lighting, single-phase tools and single-phase split AC units. For a three-phase pump or compressor motor, use the VTS12P ESS or a larger three-phase hybrid unit.

Is a three-phase hybrid generator always better for a mixed site?

For a site that runs both an office and workshop equipment with three-phase motors, one VTS12P ESS is usually simpler and lighter to deploy than running two or three single-phase units and trying to balance loads across them.

Will the output voltage match my country's standard automatically?

The standard build is 230 V (single-phase) or 230/400 V (three-phase) at 50 Hz. AB-iPower configures voltage and frequency to the destination country, for example 60 Hz for Saudi Arabia, or 120/240 V, 120/208 V or 277/480 V at 60 Hz for North America, and confirms the configuration on the quotation. State the required standard when you request a quote.

Can I connect two VTS8P ESS units to create a three-phase supply?

Not as a standard configuration. Two single-phase sources do not produce a balanced three-phase supply without additional synchronizing and phase-shifting equipment. If the site needs three-phase power, size directly with a three-phase unit such as the VTS12P ESS.

How do I account for motor starting current when sizing the unit?

A direct-on-line motor can draw six to eight times its running current for one to two seconds at start-up. Check the inverter's per-phase peak rating, not just its continuous rating, against that start-up draw, and share the motor's starting method (DOL, star-delta, soft starter or VFD) with AB-iPower when requesting a quote so the unit is matched correctly.
