A mobile solar light tower is simple on paper: panels, a battery, a mast and LED floodlights on a trailer. Choosing one is less simple. Too little battery and the lights fade at 3 a.m. in the second overcast week. Too much and you tow surplus panels all year and fit fewer units per container.
AB-iPower has built power equipment since 2003 in three factories, one in Chongqing and two in Zhejiang province. This guide explains how each type of light tower works, when it makes sense and how to size one for your site. Every figure comes from our product datasheets.
How a mobile solar light tower works
The energy path has four stages.
- Solar panels on the trailer roof fold out during the day. Our VTS models carry from 3 × 300 W (VTS3P Mini-L) up to 8 × 450 W (VTS8P-L).
- An MPPT charge controller, Victron or a Chinese brand depending on the configuration, pulls the most power the panels can give and charges the battery at the system voltage (DC 12, 24 or 48 V).
- The battery bank stores the day’s harvest. You choose gel/AGM or lithium LiFePO4, from 7.2 kWh up to 19.2 kWh depending on the model.
- LED floodlights on a telescopic mast turn that energy into light at night. Our fixtures are rated 180 lm/W and IP65, in sets of 4, 6 or 8 lights at 60, 100, 200 or 250 W each.
An optional photocell switches the lights on at dusk and off at dawn. The VTS4P-L adds a power display, a low-battery alarm and remote dimming, and the VTS3P Mini-L’s remote adjusts mast height, light angle and brightness. An AC charger (optional on most models, standard on the Skid-L) tops a unit up from site power before it goes out.
Solar-only, hybrid or diesel: which type fits your site
There is no single best light tower. There is the one that matches your sun, your shift pattern and your refuelling logistics.
Solar-only towers
The VTS trailers and the Skid-L run on sun and battery alone. No fuel, no engine noise, no oil changes. That suits night work near homes or under noise limits, remote sites where every fuel run ties up a driver, and unmanned compounds nobody visits for days.
The limit is physics: a solar tower can only spend what its panels put back. In long overcast spells or deep shade, the battery drains night after night.
Solar with a backup generator
The VTS3P-L, VTS3P Max-L, VTS4P-L, VTS6P-L and VTS8P-L can be ordered with a 3 kW gas or diesel backup generator, or without. It sits idle in good weather and recharges the battery when the sun cannot keep up, which is useful for fleets that send the same units to very different climates.
Battery-diesel hybrid: the VP3K
The VP3K hybrid light tower takes a different approach. Its datasheet lists no solar array: a 5 kWh LiFePO4 battery runs the lights, and the energy management system starts a Kubota Z482 diesel engine only when the load or the battery needs it, so the engine stays off for most working hours.
The figures: 4 × 250 W LED, 170,000 lm, an 8 m six-section mast, 0.3 L/h fuel use when the engine runs, a 100 L tank and 67 dB(A) at 7 m. The battery gives 5 hours on its own and recharges in 1 hour. Choose the VP3K when you need guaranteed light regardless of weather but want far less fuel and engine noise than a conventional diesel tower.
The VP3K pairs a 5 kWh LiFePO4 battery with a Kubota engine that starts only when needed.
Diesel LED towers: VL4K-B and VP3K Diesel
Some jobs cannot depend on the sun: round-the-clock schedules, high-latitude winters, tunnels and shaded cuttings. There, a diesel LED tower is still the straightforward answer.
- The VL4K-B uses a Kubota D1105 engine, 1,920 W of IP67 LED heads (1,400 or 2,100 W on request) covering up to 25,000 m², an 8 m five-section galvanized mast and a 70 L tank for about 70 hours at 1 L/h. Noise is 60 dB(A) at 7 m.
- The VP3K Diesel shares the VP3K frame and mast, with a Kubota Z482 Stage V engine, 4 × 250 W LED (160,000 lm) and a 108 L tank for about 108 hours at 1 L/h. A 5 kWh LFP battery is an option if you want to move toward hybrid operation later.
How to size a mobile solar light tower
Sizing comes down to five questions. Answer them in order.
1. How much light, and over what area?
Perimeter security needs far less light than an excavation face or a rail possession. On the VTS range you choose 4, 6 or 8 fixtures at 60, 100, 200 or 250 W each, so the LED load can range from 240 W to 2,000 W. As a reference point, the VTS3P Max-L is quoted at 38,400 to 96,000 lm depending on configuration, and the diesel and hybrid towers sit higher (160,000 to 170,000 lm on the VP3K versions).
Mast height and aim matter as much as lumens: light from a 9 m mast spreads wider than the same fixtures at 6 m, and angle adjustment and light-bar steering put the light on the work rather than in the operator’s eyes.
2. How many hours per night, and how many nights without sun?
This sets the battery. Here is a worked example with a VTS4P-L fitted with the 16.56 kWh LiFePO4 pack (3 × 230 Ah at DC 24 V).
Planning assumptions (ours, not datasheet values): we treat 80 % of lithium capacity as usable, allow about 20 % for charging and conversion losses, and assume the site sees the equivalent of 4 full-sun hours per day in winter. Check local solar data for your own site.
- Usable energy: 16.56 kWh × 80 % ≈ 13.2 kWh.
- Configuration A, 4 × 200 W = 800 W for a 12-hour night = 9.6 kWh per night. One night is covered with about 3.6 kWh to spare.
- Configuration B, 4 × 100 W = 400 W for 12 hours = 4.8 kWh per night. The battery alone covers about two and a half nights.
- Daily solar: 4 × 450 W = 1,800 W × 4 h ≈ 7.2 kWh, or roughly 5.8 kWh after losses.
So in this winter scenario, configuration B is self-sustaining (5.8 kWh in, 4.8 kWh out). Configuration A is not: it draws 9.6 kWh and gets about 5.8 kWh back, so the battery runs down over a few nights. The fix is one of three things: fewer or lower-wattage lights, more panels (the VTS6P-L with 6 × 435 W or the VTS8P-L with 8 × 450 W), or the backup generator.
Battery chemistry also changes the numbers. Gel/AGM packs reach 19.2 kWh on the VTS4P-L, VTS6P-L and VTS8P-L but are normally cycled less deeply than lithium, so their usable share is smaller. Lithium on these models is offered at 11 or 16.56 kWh.
3. How much sun will the panels see in the worst month?
Size for winter, not the annual average. More panel area recharges faster: the VTS3P Max-L carries 3 × 575 W LONGi panels against 3 × 435 W on the standard VTS3P-L, which reaches full charge in about 7.3 hours on its datasheet. If the worst month still does not balance, specify the 3 kW backup generator rather than oversizing everything else.
4. Mast height and wind
The VTS trailers and the Skid-L extend to 20–30 ft (6–9 m), with manual, electric or hydraulic masts on most models, and are rated for 100 km/h wind. The VL4K-B and VP3K Diesel also have 8 m masts rated at 100 km/h. The VP3K hybrid’s datasheet gives 23 m/s wind resistance. Any rating assumes the outriggers are down and the unit is level.
5. Towing, moving and shipping
All VTS trailers run on 15 in wheels with a 2 in ball or 70 mm ring hitch, and most datasheets give a towing speed of 60 mph. Weights run from 1,100 kg (VTS3P Mini-L) to 2,000 kg (VTS8P-L), so check your tow vehicle’s rating. The Mini-L has a guide wheel and a small footprint so one person can position it on firm ground. The Skid-L is not towed at all: it sits on a skid base for forklift or crane handling, which helps on crowded sites and in depots.
Container loading, listed in the table below, varies a lot and drives your landed cost per unit.
Rail and road night works are typical jobs for the VTS3P Max-L, where crews need light through the whole shift without refuelling.

Adding CCTV: lighting and security in one unit
Light deters theft, but cameras record it. On the VTS4P-L, VTS6P-L and VTS8P-L, CCTV cameras are a factory option, and the VTS6P-L and VTS8P-L can also take a communication system. The tower then lights a compound and watches it from the same solar-charged battery, with no grid connection or trenching.
It works best on sites that sit empty at night: material yards, plant compounds, car parks. Cameras draw power 24 hours a day, not just after dusk, so add their load to the sizing exercise above. Our article on the VTS8P-L mobile solar lighting trailer with CCTV covers that configuration in detail. Camera choice is agreed at quotation.
What rental fleets should check before buying
For rental fleets, these points decide whether units come back from hire on time and in one piece.
- Stabilizers. All VTS trailers and the Skid-L have four manual outriggers. Train customers to level the unit before raising the mast; the wind rating depends on it.
- Maintenance. A solar-only tower has no engine to service: keep the panels clean and check the battery. Diesel and hybrid units still need engine service, though the VP3K’s on-demand starts cut its running hours.
- Monitoring. Remote control and monitoring is an option on the VP3K Diesel. On the solar side, the VTS4P-L’s power display and low-battery alarm, and the VTS3P Mini-L’s remote, make status checks quick for site crews.
- Battery standardisation. Lithium options across the VTS range come in the same two sizes, 11 or 16.56 kWh at DC 24 V, which simplifies spares.
- Container loading. For fleet imports, loading drives landed cost. The VP3K fits 20 per container thanks to its folding tongue; the Skid-L 14 per 40 ft; the VTS6P-L and VTS4P-L 5 per 40 ft.
- Warranty. The VTS3P Mini-L, VTS3P Max-L, VTS4P-L, VTS6P-L, VTS8P-L and Skid-L carry a 2-year warranty on their datasheets.

Frequently asked questions
How long does a mobile solar light tower run on a full battery?
It depends on battery size and how many LEDs you run. On our datasheets, the compact VTS3P Mini-L gives 8+ hours at full brightness, the VTS3P-L up to 21 hours of continuous discharge, and the VTS3P Max-L more than 35 hours, depending on LED configuration.
Should I choose a solar-only or a hybrid light tower?
Choose solar-only when the site gets reasonable sun and the lights run mainly at night. If you expect long overcast spells, heavy shade or near-continuous operation, add the optional 3 kW backup generator to a VTS trailer or choose the VP3K battery-diesel hybrid.
Do solar light towers work in very cold or very hot climates?
The VTS trailers and the Skid-L are rated from -35 °C to +60 °C, with a 100 km/h wind rating and IP65 LED fixtures. The VP3K hybrid is rated from -20 °C to +65 °C. In winter, size the panels and battery for the shortest days, not the average.
Can a solar light tower carry CCTV cameras?
Yes. CCTV cameras are an option on the VTS4P-L, VTS6P-L and VTS8P-L, and the VTS6P-L and VTS8P-L can also take a communication system. One unit then lights the area and monitors it at night without grid power.
How many light towers fit in a shipping container?
It varies by model: 2 per 20 ft and 5 per 40 ft for the VTS3P Max-L, VTS4P-L and VTS6P-L; 4 per 40 ft for the VTS8P-L; 8 per 40 ft for the VTS3P Mini-L; 14 per 40 ft for the skid-mounted Skid-L.
What is the minimum order and lead time?
The minimum order is one unit, with a 5 % discount from 8 units. Payment is 30 % deposit and the balance before shipment, FOB or CIF. Lead time is 15 to 45 working days depending on configuration and quantity.
