The EH04E is a rack-mount LiFePO4 home battery and 5 kW hybrid inverter built for villas, small commercial premises and plant rooms that already work with rack or frame-based equipment. It ships either as individual 5.12 kWh modules for an existing cabinet, or as a complete built frame ready to connect, and scales from 10 to 41 kWh in eight module steps.

EH04E rack-mount battery vs the stackable EH04: which format fits your site

AB-iPower sells two versions of the same 5.12 kWh LiFePO4 module. The EH04 is a tower-format stack on castors with a 5.5 kW or 11 kW inverter, covered in our modular scaling guide - it suits a garage or utility room where the unit stands alone. The EH04E covered here uses a fixed 5 kW inverter and is built for installers who already have a rack, a frame, or a plant room layout to fill - typical of villas with a dedicated technical room, or small commercial sites such as offices, retail units and telecom huts.

Feature EH04E EH04
Inverter 5 kW, 230 V 5.5 kW or 11 kW, 230 V
Battery module 5.12 kWh LiFePO4 5.12 kWh LiFePO4
Capacity range 10-41 kWh (2-8 modules) 10-41 kWh (2-8 modules)
Max PV input 12 kW 6 kW or 12 kW
Format Rack modules or built frame Stacked tower on castors
Cycle life 6,000 cycles at 80% DoD 6,000 cycles at 80% DoD
Typical site Existing rack/frame, plant room Standalone garage/utility room

The battery chemistry, cut-off voltages and cycle life are identical across both versions, so choosing between them is a mechanical and site-planning decision, not a performance one.

Rack module vs built frame: what installers actually receive

EH04E ships in two configurations. As individual rack modules, each 5.12 kWh unit is delivered separately for the installer to mount into an existing 19-inch or custom rack alongside other rack-mount equipment - useful when the site already has a telecom-style cabinet or a purpose-built plant room frame. As a built frame, the modules and inverter arrive pre-assembled in AB-iPower’s frame, ready to position and wire, which reduces on-site assembly time when there is no existing rack to use.

For either format, confirm before ordering: number of modules required, whether the site rack has the load-bearing capacity for populated 5.12 kWh modules (confirm each module’s weight when requesting the quote), and whether ventilation and cable entry points match the existing cabinet.

Installation planning: clearances, wiring order and PV

A rack-mount installation follows the same electrical sequence regardless of format:

  1. Site and enclosure check. Confirm ambient temperature stays within the charging range of 0 to 65°C and discharging range of -20 to 65°C, and that humidity stays at 15-90% RH, non-condensing. Outdoor plant rooms in hot Australian or US climates should include shading or ventilation to keep the enclosure within range.
  2. Module count vs inverter. The 5 kW inverter accepts 2 to 8 modules (10 to 41 kWh). Decide the final module count before wiring, since adding modules later means re-terminating the battery bus, not just plugging in a spare unit.
  3. DC wiring. Nominal battery voltage is 51.2 V, charge cut-off 57.6 V, discharge cut-off 42.4 V. Rated output current is 100 A, with a BMS protection trip at 105 A - size cabling and breakers to this current, not to the inverter’s rated power alone.
  4. PV strings. The inverter accepts up to 12 kW of PV, with an MPPT window of 120-450 Vdc, a 500 Vdc input ceiling and a 22 A maximum DC input current. Check string voltage at the site’s coldest expected temperature against that 500 Vdc ceiling.
  5. AC output. Rated output is 5 kW at 230 Vac, with an input voltage range of 120-500 Vac on the inverter’s grid side. Confirm local grid connection requirements before commissioning; inverter certifications and grid codes differ by state and country, so verify them for each project.
  6. Commissioning and monitoring. Confirm firmware and app pairing before handover; connectivity details for EH04E specifically should be checked against the datasheet.

Sizing for villas: matching capacity to daily load

Use a simple load-based method rather than a percentage rule of thumb. Assumptions below are illustrative - always confirm actual site load with a metered profile.

  • List the loads to keep running during grid outage or evening self-consumption: fridge, lighting, TV, router, and occasionally an AC unit or pump.
  • Add up their combined average draw over the hours you want covered (for example, 1.2 kW average over 8 evening/overnight hours = 9.6 kWh).
  • Add margin for battery depth of discharge and inverter losses - EH04E’s cycle life rating of 6,000 cycles is stated at 80% DoD, so plan usable capacity accordingly rather than assuming 100% of the nameplate kWh is available every cycle.
  • Round up to the nearest module step: 10, 15.36, 20.48, 25.6, 30.72, 35.84 or 41 kWh (2 to 8 modules of 5.12 kWh).

A villa with a 9.6 kWh evening/overnight load and no daytime AC would typically size around 3-4 modules (15-20 kWh) once DoD and inverter losses are factored in. A villa running a small split-system AC overnight, or a home office with continuous server/router load, should size toward the upper end (6-8 modules, 30-41 kWh).

Small commercial applications: where EH04E fits and where it doesn’t

EH04E’s 5 kW inverter suits small commercial loads such as a single-phase retail unit, a small office, or a telecom equipment room where the rack format matches existing infrastructure. For sites with combined loads above what a 5 kW inverter and up to 41 kWh can cover, or for outdoor unmanned sites needing IP65 protection, compare against dedicated commercial or microgrid units.

MG12K-40 12 kW LiFePO4 microgrid energy storage system with stacked battery modules for outdoor or telecom sites The MG12K-40 offers 12 kW output and IP65 protection for higher-load or outdoor small commercial and telecom sites.

The MG12K-40 delivers 12 kW rated output, up to 40.96 kWh, 15.6 kW of solar input and IP65 protection for indoor or outdoor installation - relevant for telecom equipment rooms or small commercial sites with higher continuous load or exposure to weather. If the site instead needs an all-in-one floor-standing unit that a homeowner or single installer can commission without a rack, the EH10K-16 with its 10 kW inverter and 16.08 kWh battery, expandable to 60 kW in parallel, is a simpler alternative covered in our 16 kWh LiFePO4 battery article.

EH10K-16 10 kW 16.08 kWh (60 kW parallel, 6 units) 10 kW All-in-one floor cabinet Full household, simple install
MG12K-40 12 kW 40.96 kWh 15.6 kW IP65 modular cabinet Outdoor/telecom, higher continuous load

Procurement checklist before ordering

  • Confirm module count and inverter size against the load calculation above.
  • Confirm rack or frame format needed - loose modules for an existing cabinet, or the built frame.
  • Request the installation drawing and weight-per-module figure for structural/rack loading checks.
  • Confirm PV string design against the 500 Vdc maximum and 120-450 Vdc MPPT window.
  • Confirm local grid-connection and certification requirements for your state or region - these are project-specific and should be verified with your electrical authority before ordering.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between EH04E and EH04?

Both use the same 5.12 kWh LiFePO4 module and scale from 10 to 41 kWh. EH04 pairs the modules with a 5.5 kW or 11 kW inverter in a stacked tower cabinet. EH04E uses a fixed 5 kW inverter and is supplied either as loose rack modules for an existing 19-inch or custom cabinet, or as a complete built frame - which suits villas and small commercial rooms with their own rack infrastructure.

Can EH04E modules be added to individual racks already on site?

Yes. EH04E is supplied as individual rack modules when the site already has a cabinet or frame (for example a telecom or plant room rack) that the installer wants to populate directly, from 2 up to 8 modules per inverter.

What is the maximum solar input for EH04E?

Up to 12 kW of PV, with an MPPT voltage range of 120-450 Vdc and a 500 Vdc input ceiling. Confirm string design against local PV standards before commissioning.

Is EH04E suitable for small commercial buildings, not just homes?

Yes, within its 5 kW inverter and up to 41 kWh capacity. For higher power small commercial loads, compare against the MG12K-40, which offers 12 kW output and IP65 rating for indoor or outdoor installation.

What clearance does the built frame version need?

Clearance is set out on the installation drawing supplied with the datasheet - request it before finalizing the plant room or exterior wall layout.
